Wireless Router:
Wireless router routes packets between a wired and wireless network. Usually wireless routers have a WAN (Wide Area Network) port and 3 to 4 (LAN) Local area network ports. Some of them have in built antennas and some have external antennas.
Wireless Access Point:
Wireless Access points are like hubs. They operate in half dublex mode and provide wireless signal to clients. There many kinds of Access Points 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11b/g, 802.11a/g, 802.11a/b/g.
Wireless Bridges:
Wireless bridges extend the wireless or wired network by connecting to another AP (in bridge mode) or another Wireless Bridge. There are two configurations for this. Root mode or Non-Root mode. A bridge in root mode can have more or more Non-root mode bridges connected to it.
Wireless Repeaters:
Wireless repeaters extend the wireless signal. Some Access points can be configured as wireless repeaters. However this is not a best way to utilize wireless network.
Wireless LAN Switches or Controllers:
Wireless LAN Switches or controllers basically provide a centralized management interface for multiple access points.
Wireless VoIP Gateway:
Wireless VoIP Gateway integrates router, switch, AP and telephone gateway into one device.
Wireless Media Gateway:
Wireless media gateway lets you connect your home theatre system to your computer via wireless.
Wireless Presentation Gateway:
Wireless presentation gateway enables laptop users to connect to an overhead projector unit via wireless. This enables multiple users to share the projector instead of plugging and unplugging cables.
Wireless Print Server:
Wireless print server lets users connect printers to rest of the network via wireless. This can be useful when it is difficult to run wires and/or it is way to expensive to run Cat5 cables.
Wireless Hot Spot Gateway:
Wireless hot spot gateway enable users (hotel owners, resturant and cafe owners) to provide public wireless inetnet access. It can enable them to either charge for the service or provide limited free access.
Wireless Client Adapters:
Wireless client adapters lets desktop, laptop, PDA and other mobile devices to connect to a wireless network. There are multiple kinds of wireless client adapters depending on the device. Some examples are:
-PCI adapter (Desktops)
-PCMCIA adapter (laptops)
-CF Adapter (PDA's)
-SDIO adapter (Treo's)
